The Borrowers Be

Tell us the story again, the young-ones said to the Elder…how we got our name. They gathered around the fire pit at dusk with their favorite toys in hand and wrapped in blankets. With eyes wide, the young-ones settled into stillness.

The story commenced as the Elder historian told his story once more. We are the “Borrowers Be” and this is our story.

At the beginning of our time we were known as the Borrowers because “we be wanting”. We were in need of all things as young people of the world. We wanted food, shelter and clothing. We wanted comfort and hearth for our young-ones. We travelled the lands to gather our wants and settle in this place.

We settled in well as the land gave all we needed. We became known as “we be thriving”. Our stores were full from abundant crops and harvest and it carried us through the sleeping season of frost.

The seasons suffered some years. The how and why of it I know not. This time was called “we be lacking”. We did manage but all our skills and talents were tested and taxed. We had to venture to new lands with our concerns and doubt in tow…comfort no longer a steady friend. We did manage as a community with our stores adequate to our needs.

Having lived long enough on the land to know the ‘mind of the seasons’, we came to understand its variances. Our history then named us “we be balanced” for we came to live with the cycles of nature. Our numbers grew. We maintained our standards of wants for all. We thought ourselves a success as a community.

As time passed and our wants were met, there was a knowing of land depletion. We managed. We reviewed our history. We sought an answer to replenish the land. This was the time of “we be seekers”. Our thoughts were brought together for answers to secure our future.

Our thoughts and talents combined brought our strengths to the front. We recalled the land as we first knew it. We remembered the best of the landscapes. We remembered the best of ourselves. We chose to return its beauty. We set our plans forward to the future and called this time “we be wise”. Knowing this to be a timely but worthwhile venture, we set forth with our plan.

The community gathered as planned, bringing their gifts to the land. This time, “we be giving”. As the ground was turned, each family brought a select gift…a single seed plus one…one for our garden and one for the land. Trees, vines, berries and fruits were planted for restoration.

With the land restored, the streams flowed clean, the air smelled fresh and the crops held greater bounty than ever before. Birds returned with a sweeter song. Butterflies and honeybees made their homes with the abundant wild flowers…and “we be happy”.

Dearest young-ones, the Elder said, we are nearing the end of our story. We are here on this land for an uncertain length of time. We commune with land and nature and borrow from both. We learn their wisdom and balance. We survive because we borrow, then return. We are the “Borrowers Be” for when we’re one with one and all, they let the borrowers be.

Now young-ones, your favorite time is here. Adorn your wreaths of flowers and garlands made from vine. Wave your boughs and branches and chant around the fire.

“We, Wheeee!, the “Borrowers Be”
One with land in harmony
Balanced seekers, wise are we
Giving back so happily!”

The young-ones danced as the Elder smiled, so content in being a “Borrowers Be”…for after all…“we be love.”

Appreciation

Thankful recognition: Appreciation is more than a grateful word or gesture. It acknowledges worth. It demonstrates a value system between two people. When this is established, it is then accepted within the community and beyond to distant shores….but it starts one on one.

How do you evaluate someone’s worth? Is it by your rules alone? Do you take into account the values of others, the majority, the few, or the measure of peer pressure? Do you think with your mind or do you take the value from your heart? Heart to heart is the only true equity when evaluating humanity.

So often we evaluate based on our wants. This method usually tallies what is lacking in our life which will always leave us coming up empty. To tally negative numbers will always leave you in a deficiency. This suggests that you as an individual is lacking in some way. It will always leave you longing for something. If this method isn’t working for you, make a change.

To tally worth, you must start with something tangible. Love, hugs, handshakes, deliberate acts of kindness, smiles and lending a helping hand are good places to start. This will get you a tally sheet you can go forward with over time. You should always look forward, but just in case you may have missed a moment of appreciation from the past, it is never too late for recognition. A simple ‘thank-you’ is usually sufficient in exchange. When in doubt, say it anyhow. Just wait for it…the smile in return. Now, there’s payback!

When you go forward in this manner, you will be working with numbers you can rely on…positive numbers! These numbers will always add up. They will never leave you wanting for they are adding up all your worth. You are more than adequate. You are more than good enough. This method will point out your perfections because you are working from your heart and your heart will always lead you back to God.

“God gave you a gift of 86,400 seconds a day today. Have you used one to say ‘Thank you?’ ” ~ William A. Ward

Should there be people in your life that have passed, and you wish to appreciate them now, know that it’s never too late. Jesus said: "For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” (Mt 18:20) You, Jesus and God make quite a threesome! Say a prayer and it will be heard.
Counting your blessings will get you there.

The Ivy League

The ivy braves on through winter

It doesn’t seem to struggle in the snow

It gently sleeps till the equinox beckons

A warm breeze gently caresses the leaves

One at a time

As the ground thaws they stir

Winds gesture grace in new growth

Verdant green flushes their palms

Spring rains soon to follow

Bringing new life

Kissing Babies

What is it about kissing babies that is so popular? The parents and grandparents are always so delightfully proud to show them off …deservedly so. Politicians may have their own personal agenda for doing so, but they are not in the majority now, are they? The rest of us do it with or without public opinions and polls.

Babies are just plain cute. Walk down any street or through a grocery store and your eyes will peek-a-boo into the baby carrier for a glimpse of new life. More often than not, eye contact will reap the reward of a baby smile acknowledging a new found friend. Eye contact with the parent will make the parent beam. “Congratulations on a beautiful baby!”

The clothes are cute, the colors vibrant, the accessories today are out of this world. The babies smell of soft, delicate powder (most of the time!) that pleases the senses. A cuddle and you’re lost in the moment of babydom!

There’s nothing like finding yourself in the reflection of a child. One hug and ‘voila’…instant renewal in life and the life of another. Be it your family or a friend’s baby, an instant connection to an extended life and into the future comes from a single baby moment.

Call me silly, but, I think this baby-thing is catching on! I think they’re here to stay!

Preparation

Well, after hitting 65 degrees today, spring certainly feels like it’s here to stay in spite of the forecast. The last accumulation of snow in the shadows managed to quietly slip away today. The departure was unannounced while the ground breathed in the warm, fresh air. Little bits of frozen soil were turned over in the garden in preparation of both the equinox later this month and the time change this weekend. Yes indeed, spring is in the air.

How carefully we prepare for the new and dependable season. We know what to expect. We have almanacs, meteorologists, magazines, gardening shows and our personal histories to know what to expect. Or do we? This past winter for instance was a record breaker in being almost non-existent when it comes to the traditional New England winter. Can we now count on the traditional spring or should we expect an early one?

More snow…God forbid!

Let’s throw caution to the wind (yes, pun intended with the fifty mile-per-hour winds today) and just expect the unexpected! It seems the bulbs are doing just fine without our constant attention. They are poking out of the ground already, with or without our permission. It would seem that Mother Nature has a handle on things.

Rather than thinking we can take charge of the approaching season, or controlling the future oasis of the summer season to follow, we should take a different avenue. Forget competing with Mother Nature and just help her along. Give the garden a little nudge and give yourself a break. Simple tasks and clean-up will allow nature to take its course on course of course! This will allow us to take advantage of our personal relationship with the great outdoors. A little walk, a breath of fresh air, a communion with the sun and birds will give you a new reflection in the water of the newly thawed pond as you pass by. It’s time to shed the lethargy of winter’s hibernation. Prepare to reunite with Terra Firma. Walk the path she walks with your face in the sun, the wind at your back and spring rains to cleanse the spirit.

Prepare to renew.

Considerations

At a recent gathering of our clan of Fairies, we as a group were complimented by one of our own. This individual who shall remain nameless, but her initials are ‘P.a.t.t.i.’, mentioned that we were all so thoughtful, kind and considerate. In her reflections, she mentioned that there were so many times in life that people in general don’t notice one another. Never could she recall that we neglected to hold a door open, make a phone call of concern, or neglect one another.

Over the years, we have all suffered illnesses and withstood physical discomforts. Calls were made, food prepared and delivered, carpooling, prayers said, and house gifts sent. “These considerations come naturally” she said. “We don’t ask nor expect and yet they arrive.” Sometimes it’s the simplest gesture that gets noticed…getting into a buffet line and being handed the plate first. Emails and e-cards are sent, holiday cards in snail-mail too. Hospital visits and get well at home visits are included. Congratulations for a child’s event and new grandchildren are also acknowledged. “We are an exceptional crew”, she said.

“There aren’t many like us or as lucky as us. We genuinely like and appreciate each other. When we are together in a crowd, people take notice of our camaraderie. ‘They’ want to be like us….good friends, lifelong friends.”

It’s nice it shows.

Perhaps it’s our shared background, our introduction to each other at St. Mary School. Maybe it is the values instilled at a young age. But, what is it that accounts for our friendly continuation beyond our 8th year at this school? It can only be the acceptance of one another…as is. This is the root of our friendships. Not always an even keel as life flows by, but gentle enough to guide us back to each other. The appreciation and considerations were like glue…solid, yet supple and flexible to allow us to each be our own person.

Considerations make considerably good friends.

International Women’s Day

Today, March 8th, is International Women’s Day. This date has been set aside globally to honor women, their achievements and their future goals. This year the theme is “Empowerment of Rural Women” & the “Elimination of Poverty and Hunger”.

It is fitting that this date be a part of Women’s History Month. Each March we have a month-long celebration of women and their legacy.  Speaking of legacies, this year also marks the 100th anniversary of the Girl Scouts; an honorable society and tradition to both the individual and the social circles it encompasses.

Find the best of yourself and share it with a young girl as the guardianship of all women’s futures. It will guarantee the continuity of the feminine spirit.

To Control Or Not To Control

What is the opposite of control? The dictionary describes it as helplessness. Is it helplessness or being out-of-control? Is it out-of-control or not wishing to open up to other viewpoints?

Control mandates a personal set of values. If your values are not in sinc with another’s, then you are already out of control. Perception of control depends on whether you are subject to tunnel vision or wide-eyed and open to the world. If you accept the possibilities that may come your way, you have more options of change with opportunities. With tunnel vision, you limit your options. Traditionally we hear the expression “as one door closes, another one opens”; but, if both doors are locked tight, nothing changes at all. It may be a state of control, but to nowhere.

The illusion of control can be deceiving. It can lock you into a point of time as well as a state of mind. Life can atrophy instead of being preserved. Open a window, open a door and let some fresh air in. Broaden your horizons. It may not take that much effort. Just unlock the door!

As the breeze blows, let your heart follow. You might be surprised to see what blows your way!

The Truth And Nothing But The Truth

As usual, ideas for the blog present themselves to me in due time. Today while stopped at a red light, I saw a bumper sticker that read:

“In a time of universal deceit, to speak the truth is a revolutionary act.”

Do not ask me the sponsor of this bumper sticker as I couldn’t squint that long while waiting for the light to turn green! It reads true though. Who would ever imagine that speaking the truth would be a radical concept and action! Yet, the bumper sticker reads true as we have all experienced lies at some time in our lives. Lies take longer according to Wikipedia. (See Detection, third bulleted notation, footnote number 4.) Wikipedia also lists the types of lies…twenty-three of them under Classification. Who knew they had categories!

The shortest distance between two points is speaking the truth. Truth cannot be found in lies. The strings and webs get tangled, knotted, frayed and unraveled. When this happens, you can’t unknot them.

When you cut the strings to the lies, you can become ‘human’ and begin to grow up.

You must be truthful to yourself first. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:32

The Days of Yore to Fore

Bring with you the blossoms of Avalon
Arched gateways from the lea
Plant them in New Avalon
At the shore by the sea

Near the well we shall drink
From a single cup
Dawn to the noon of night
Till dusk we shall sup

To our twilight years
We shall wine and dine
As we drink sweet love
The wedding cup of thine

We shall count the stars
Our journey’s traverse
Shoot across the sky
As we create our universe

Transformation

To transform is to change. In order for the change to take place, there must be a catalyst. The catalyst can be a thought, an interaction or an event that affects you to change. This change doesn’t have to be a genetic anomaly as in sci-fi movies. It doesn’t have to be dramatic as in an action flick. Nor does it have to be in slow motion as evolution itself.

I prefer to think of it as a kind and loving interaction…a hug, a wink, a smile, a longing glance, a kiss. Call me romantic, but when I think of transformations, I go to the master of them all. That’s right, the “King of Romance”…Walt Disney. Nobody illustrates transformations, change through love, better than Walt. Walt Disney has brought us more insight into human nature and the art of transformation than anyone else I can think of.

Through the magic of Disney we view our inner light, hidden potential and triumphs over life’s adversities. We get a little help from genies, fairies and fairy godmothers. Mysterious lights and moon-glow appear. Rainbows and woodland creatures guide the characters as pixie dust and sunbeams wrap around and transform them. A simple kiss will transform a frog into a handsome prince or a wish into a magic carpet ride. In each and every movie, a belief has been challenged, experienced and revitalized. With each challenge, a new life is born. Wonders are created that defy logic.

Transformation…you can’t beat it!

An Educated Palate

We like to think of ourselves as connoisseurs, educated in many ways. When it comes to our palate, some like one kind of food and another prefers something different. The choices are unlimited in this world… sweet, sour, bitter and salty, not to mention hot ‘n spicy!

Yet, when it comes to our life, our day-to-day living, what kind of appetite do we have?

Salty tears of the past? Sour grapes of regret? Bitter words? Sweetness towards others? Hot ‘n spicy for life’s adventures and wanderlust?

One man’s meat is another man’s poison. What works for one doesn’t always work for another; yet we must accept the choices of others providing it nourishes the soul. Ultimately, what works towards peace and harmony in one will work for another.

It’s probably safe to say that we all have a sweet tooth. If this self-indulgence can be extended to others, then all of life will be sweet.

SWEET!

Haiku: Only Love Prevails

Choose your own name star
Make a wish, take light from it
There’s always more light
*
Be honest with wish
Be honest with source of wish
Look to the heavens
*
Now pick a flower
Make a wish, make it from truth
See what now blossoms
*
Heaven and Earth meet
The new bloom is yours alone
Your hearts creation
*
On this new bloom grows
Heart dreams for your new future
Petal by petal
*
Each a dream come true
Each with a happy ending
Spirited, bright paths
*
What is in heaven
Must be recreated here
One heart at a time
*
Toss petals on your path
That others may see your joy
Only love prevails

Life As Kinetic Art

Does life throw you a curve? Are you ever forced to take a detour? Just when the going gets good do you find a road sign stating “Slippery When Wet”…(aren’t we all?)… and just then it begins to rain! Well, you’re not alone. That’s life!

There are so many clichés about looking on the bright side of life, that it’s probably time to take one and own it. Yes, when life hands you lemons, make lemonade. This one we know, but do we incorporate it into our life? Or, do we fight each detour, road barrier and speed bump?

Take Mother Nature for instance. We’ve been a bit spoiled in this area with the kind spring weather during these winter months. While the majority has enjoyed it, the hardware stores can’t get rid of winter inventory of shovels and snow blowers fast enough. Spring cleaning may have been started a bit early around the house but the snow plow drivers are disappointed. Just as we put our shovels away and stash the mittens, March may be showing up like a lion. It’s nice to plan ahead, but like the willow, we must bend to changing winds.

I like to think that Rube Goldberg made his inventions as the day presented objects of interest to him. He may have started out his day with an idea going from point A to point B. I imagine him saying to himself, “Self, wouldn’t this be so much more interesting if we added 24 more points of interest?! No one will be bored and think of the things we learn along the way!” Perhaps as he went along, he added every gadget there was just to explore the obstacles! A to Z it is!

Our thoughts must be flexible. Our goals, no matter how high, may have to accept detours, plateaus and dips in road. For no matter how many twists and turns we make, we will always come full circle. Making a game of it has to be done from time to time…high points, low points and around the bend again. Life is kinetic art. “Go, go, Gadget, go!”
