These few days of dismal drizzle and a pall of grey overhead make me
look to the past. During our SMF days, when inside school on a rainy day, we
had a mid-day exercise immediately following lunch. A little bit of
cardiovascular care, long before we had that term, came in the form of marching
about the room to music.
Rain trickled down the windows’ exterior while we looked outside
with the realization that there would be no hopscotching and ball playing in
the school yard. ‘Grace’ was solemnly prayed and lunch was eaten. The folding
of the placemats on our desk completed the venue. The record player was located
in Mother Superior’s office. With a little squelch on the loud speakers, we
prepared for the music to play. Up we went, standing at attention at the side
of our desks. A classic song such as “Stars
and Stripes Forever” blared into the classroom.
It didn’t seem to be much of an event…at first…but, within a
minute we were singing, marching, swinging our arms, and smiling at kids that
were just seated at the back of the room moments before. Shoulder passing
shoulder as we whisked pass the blackboard brought smiles to our faces. Laughs
and giggles ensued. Humor was heightened and our spirits prepared for the
afternoon.
It was a good day, rain or shine.
