Happy Groundhog Day

This is one of those fair-to-middlin’ days that fall in mid-season of winter. I think it marvelous to create a celebration for just such a day. Origins of this day came from Europe. Isn’t it grand to make up a holiday based on the habits of an animal? The folklore came from us of course…with clouds the groundhog represents an early spring and with sun and shadow we’ll have six more weeks of winter. Either way you look at it it’s kind of like a glass half full vs. half empty.

An early spring could mean early fun for some and for the snow bunnies, six more weeks of winter could be just what they want to hear! Either way, get out and enjoy the day. It’s full of promise and fun. Whether a glass is half full or half empty, the starting gate is equal. Where you go from there is up to you.

I sometimes watch the day’s festivities on TV and think ‘how silly’. Year after year they and the groundhog do the same routine. As soon as I watch them I laugh! How great to have most of North America (Yes, USA & Canada!) celebrating silliness, fun and laughter from young to old. There’s even full media coverage! It does show a wonderful connection between the two states of mind. We have the same sense of humor…at least for one day!

Wouldn’t it be fun if all of our fair-to-middlin’ days were a cause for celebration? Since there are more ‘middlin’ days than peak days, there would be more celebrations. Find what makes your middlin’ days great and keep doing it. What a great way to be!
