Life As Kinetic Art

Does life throw you a curve? Are you ever forced to take a detour? Just when the going gets good do you find a road sign stating “Slippery When Wet”…(aren’t we all?)… and just then it begins to rain! Well, you’re not alone. That’s life!

There are so many clichés about looking on the bright side of life, that it’s probably time to take one and own it. Yes, when life hands you lemons, make lemonade. This one we know, but do we incorporate it into our life? Or, do we fight each detour, road barrier and speed bump?

Take Mother Nature for instance. We’ve been a bit spoiled in this area with the kind spring weather during these winter months. While the majority has enjoyed it, the hardware stores can’t get rid of winter inventory of shovels and snow blowers fast enough. Spring cleaning may have been started a bit early around the house but the snow plow drivers are disappointed. Just as we put our shovels away and stash the mittens, March may be showing up like a lion. It’s nice to plan ahead, but like the willow, we must bend to changing winds.

I like to think that Rube Goldberg made his inventions as the day presented objects of interest to him. He may have started out his day with an idea going from point A to point B. I imagine him saying to himself, “Self, wouldn’t this be so much more interesting if we added 24 more points of interest?! No one will be bored and think of the things we learn along the way!” Perhaps as he went along, he added every gadget there was just to explore the obstacles! A to Z it is!

Our thoughts must be flexible. Our goals, no matter how high, may have to accept detours, plateaus and dips in road. For no matter how many twists and turns we make, we will always come full circle. Making a game of it has to be done from time to time…high points, low points and around the bend again. Life is kinetic art. “Go, go, Gadget, go!”
