Well, after hitting 65 degrees today, spring certainly feels like
it’s here to stay in spite of the forecast. The last accumulation of snow in
the shadows managed to quietly slip away today. The departure was unannounced
while the ground breathed in the warm, fresh air. Little bits of frozen soil
were turned over in the garden in preparation of both the equinox later this
month and the time change this weekend. Yes indeed, spring is in the air.
How carefully we prepare for the new and dependable season. We
know what to expect. We have almanacs, meteorologists, magazines, gardening
shows and our personal histories to know what to expect. Or do we? This past
winter for instance was a record breaker in being almost non-existent when it
comes to the traditional New England winter. Can we now count on the
traditional spring or should we expect an early one?
More snow…God forbid!
Let’s throw caution to the wind (yes, pun intended with the fifty
mile-per-hour winds today) and just expect the unexpected! It seems the bulbs
are doing just fine without our constant attention. They are poking out of the
ground already, with or without our permission. It would seem that Mother
Nature has a handle on things.
Rather than thinking we can take charge of the approaching season,
or controlling the future oasis of the summer season to follow, we should take
a different avenue. Forget competing with Mother Nature and just help her
along. Give the garden a little nudge and give yourself a break. Simple tasks
and clean-up will allow nature to take its course on course of course! This
will allow us to take advantage of our personal relationship with the great
outdoors. A little walk, a breath of fresh air, a communion with the sun and
birds will give you a new reflection in the water of the newly thawed pond as
you pass by. It’s time to shed the lethargy of winter’s hibernation. Prepare to
reunite with Terra Firma. Walk the path she walks with your face in the sun,
the wind at your back and spring rains to cleanse the spirit.
Prepare to renew.
